Beyond the Plate: Why We Prioritize Sustainable Business Practices

Jan 27, 2026

At Salt + Soil, our philosophy is simple: Food is Medicine. But we believe that healing shouldn’t stop at your body; it must extend to the environment that sustains us. When we set out to create the cleanest meal delivery service in San Diego, we knew we had to address a glaring issue in the food industry: waste.

Many services nourish you but burden the planet with single-use plastics that linger for centuries. We chose a different path—one of conscious living, intentionality, and a deep commitment to the earth.

Why World Centric Packaging is Better for the Planet

We refuse to contribute to the global plastic crisis. That is why every meal you receive is housed in 100% compostable packaging from World Centric. Here is why we prioritize their plant-based materials over traditional plastic:

  • Renewable vs. Finite Resources: Traditional plastic is made from petroleum, a non-renewable fossil fuel. World Centric products use annually renewable plants like corn, sugarcane (bagasse), and wheat straw. This reduces our dependence on oil and lowers the carbon footprint of your meal.
  • Lower Energy & Carbon Emissions: Manufacturing plant-based compostables requires significantly less energy and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional plastic.
  • Toxic-Free Breakdown: When traditional plastic breaks down, it turns into "microplastics" and leaches chemicals like BPA. Our packaging is designed to turn into nutrient-rich soil in a commercial composting facility, keeping toxins out of our food chain.
  • Closing the Loop: By using compostable materials, we move from a "linear" economy (take, make, waste) to a "circular" one, where packaging becomes the fertilizer for the next harvest.

Our Reusable Bag Policy: Minimizing the Footprint

Sustainability is about more than just what happens at the end of a meal; it’s about the journey the meal takes to get to you. To further reduce waste, we have implemented a Reusable Bag Policy.

Instead of discarded cardboard boxes and excessive padding, your meals are delivered in high-quality insulated bags designed for longevity.

  • The Exchange: Simply leave your empty insulated bag and ice packs outside your door on your next delivery day.
  • The Impact: Our team will swap it for a fresh one, creating a closed-loop system that prevents hundreds of single-use shipping containers from entering San Diego landfills each year. This small habit by our community makes a massive collective impact.

Turning Dinner into Climate Action

Our commitment goes beyond just the container and the bag. We source regeneratively grown ingredients to restore microbial health to the soil. We believe that healthy soil creates healthy plants, which creates healthy humans.

Furthermore, we believe in giving back more than we take. For every meal sold, we plant a tree through our reforestation partners. This effectively turns your dinner into climate action, offsetting carbon and restoring ecosystems worldwide.
