How to Choose Organic Meal Delivery in San Diego (2026 Guide)

Sep 29, 2026

Every Tuesday between 9am and 4pm, our drivers make their rounds across coastal San Diego with a week of meals cooked fresh just before they left the kitchen. Before anyone orders from us, or from any meal service, the same handful of details decide whether it will work for their household, and those details are what this guide covers.

The short answer

Good organic meal delivery in San Diego comes down to three things you can check before you order: what the ingredient standard covers beyond the word "organic," how fresh the food is when it reaches your door, and whether the delivery days, area, and menu fit your week. The strongest services publish their standards in plain terms, cook locally, and tell you up front what they don't do.

Organic is where the standard starts

An organic label tells you how the produce and meat were grown. It says nothing about what the food was cooked in, and oils like canola, vegetable, and soybean show up in plenty of prepared food. Look for a service that spells out its full standard: organic ingredients, which oils it avoids, and whether gluten, dairy, and refined sugar are part of the menu.

At Salt + Soil, every meal is 100% organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined-sugar-free, made without processed ingredients, and cooked with no canola, vegetable, or soybean oil, ever. Our proteins are regenerative, grass-fed and grass-finished, and wild-caught, including pasture-raised chicken from Pasture Bird, beef from Force of Nature, and seafood sourced fresh from local San Diego distributors.

Freshness and where the food is cooked

Some meal services freeze their food or ship it across the country, and others cook locally and deliver within the week. Ask where the kitchen is, whether the meals are ever frozen, and how many days they keep once they arrive.

Our meals are cooked in one San Diego kitchen, never frozen and never shipped across the country. Refrigerate them within an hour of delivery and enjoy them within four days.

Cooked meals and meal kits are two different things

A meal kit sends raw ingredients and a recipe card, and you do the cooking. Prepared meal delivery arrives fully cooked, so dinner is a matter of reheating. Both have a place, and the right one depends on whether you want to cook or want the cooking handled.

Salt + Soil is prepared meal delivery. Most entrées reheat in about five minutes, and the reheating instructions are on the label attached to each dish.

Delivery days, area, and the order cutoff

This is where a service either fits your week or doesn't. Check which days it delivers, the delivery window, which neighborhoods it covers, when you have to order by, and whether there's a delivery fee.

We deliver once a week, every Tuesday between 9am and 4pm, primarily across coastal San Diego. Orders are due by Saturday at 8pm for the following Tuesday. The easiest way to check your address is to enter it at checkout. We don't offer pickup, so if you need a second delivery day or a pickup spot, look for a service built around that.

Menu, portions, and dietary fit

A rotating menu keeps a weekly subscription from getting stale, and portion size decides whether one meal is dinner or half of one. It also matters how a service handles dietary needs, since some can adjust individual dishes and others cook everything in set batches.

Our menu brings four new entrées every week, each available with an animal protein or as a vegan version, plus new breakfasts, desserts, and add-ons, and it goes live every Sunday. A typical entrée has roughly 4 to 6 oz each of protein, vegetables, and a starch or grain, with about 3 oz of sauce, and the macros are printed on every label. Most entrées land between 20 and 50 grams of protein.

Here is what we don't do. Our meals aren't designed to be keto, grain-free, or low-sodium, and because everything is cooked fresh in batches, we can't swap or remove ingredients from individual dishes. For a fully custom menu built around specific needs, our Private Chef service is the better fit.

Price, and what the price includes

The per-meal price is only part of the cost. Check for a delivery fee and a minimum order, and look at how easy it is to pause or cancel.

Salt + Soil entrées run $22 to $33 each, and the price per meal drops as your order grows. You can order anywhere from 3 to 14 entrées a week. A weekly subscription takes 10% off every order, new customers get 10% off a first order with code WELCOME10, and you can pause, skip, or cancel anytime before Saturday. For perspective, a lunch or dinner ordered from DoorDash or any other meal delivery service will cost more and is far less healthy!

Packaging

Meal delivery generates a lot of containers, so it's worth asking where they end up. Ours are plant-based and compostable through our partner World Centric, and they can go straight into the green bin. Bags and ice packs come back to us on your next delivery, and every order plants a tree through Tree Nation.

What to ask any service before you order

  • Which oils the kitchen cooks with
  • Whether the meals are ever frozen, and how long they keep
  • Where the kitchen is located
  • Which days they deliver, and to which neighborhoods
  • The order cutoff and any delivery fee
  • Whether they can change individual dishes for dietary needs
  • How to pause or cancel, and what happens if a meal misses the mark
